and here is how to have Adsense on your website works: a company out there trying to get people to visit their website so they can sell or commands in turn, seek to capitalize on the traffic to their websites through advertising revenue. So they will open a Google Adwords (you must choose and bid on keywords … but thats all the technical stuff that you can read on the website of AdWords). That way, whenever someone searches for a keyword that the company has bid on their ad appears in the "Sponsored Links" section (depends on what the budget of the company for listing … does not appear every time, again, the technical stuff). When they open an AdWords account, they can also subscribe to Adsense … of This way not only of their ad (s) in the search results but also on random websites that have something in common with the tag said (sometimes this is not true … it depends on how you configured your adsense). Now the important part, and each time someone clicks on a sponsored link Company announces that Google pays certain amount (based on the value of the keyword). If your site participates in Adsense as an advertising medium, you display banners / Sponsored links on your website. So if someone clicks on an ad on your site, Google pays you a certain percentage of income that they generated This particular ad because you are helping them to advertise. This amount is usually a few cents depending on the traffic on your site. If your site has a high volume of traffic, so chances are that the sponsored listings can get more clicks to generate more revenue for you. People have been known to generate thousands of dollars each month from advertising revenue, participation in AdSense. The trick is to bring more people to your site by hosting an interesting content. 
This is a relatively simple model and as far as Google is concerned, they are a relatively non-evil company. So this is not a scam … but watch out for people / companies that claim to help you generate "lots" dollars you set up with the AdSense accounts. Some of them may be scammers.
